Time for formal recognition

Anti-Bahá’í incidents reported throughout 2007 whilst the persecution of Bahá’ís still continues in Iran

  • In June 2007, it was learned that a 70-year-old man of limited means had been arrested in April 2007 in Kermanshah. Authorities charged him with the possession of three Bahá’í CDs. He was tried and charged in April 2007 with “propagating and spreading Bahaism and the defamation of the pure Imams.” His lawyer was given only 10 minutes to prepare a defence. Although the verdict has not been published, the judge orally sentenced him to one year in prison, which he is currently serving, and 70 lashes. The latter part of the sentence has not yet been carried out.

  • In June 2007, a 34-year-old man was arrested at a hardware store in Tabriz where he worked and taken to an unknown location. Two days later, he succeeded in phoning his family to let them know he was alive. A police security agent contacted Bahá’ís in Tabriz and said some of the man’s neighbours, who are members of the Basiji morality squads, had alleged that he had insulted Islam.

  • In May 2007, a husband and wife in Abadeh, near Shiraz, were arrested in their home by agents of the Information Ministry. The agents seized books, family videos, photographs, CDs, telephone directories, documents, a cellular phone, a computer, and minutes of the meetings of the small group of Bahá’ís that coordinates the affairs of the local community on an ad hoc basis. The couple were interrogated about the activities of the Bahá’ís. The wife was released after eight hours; the husband was transferred to Shiraz, where he was held in prison until late June 2007 and released on bail. He is charged with teaching the Bahá’í Faith.

  • In early May 2007, the provincial court of appeal of Mazandaran denied the appeal of three women and one man who were arrested in 2005 in Ghaem Shahr and charged with “propagation on behalf of an organization which is anti-Islamic.” The case has been referred to the Supreme Court. All have been released on bail.

  • In late April 2007, the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Sari sentenced a Bahá’í to a year in prison and four years of exile to the town of Bijar. The individual was charged with “teaching activities against the system of the Islamic Republic of Iran for the benefit of groups and various organizations opposing the system.”

  • During April and May 2007, a number of Bahá’ís were summoned for interrogation or were questioned by telephone by officials of the Ministry of Information or the police in various localities, including in Babol Sar, Bandar Abbas, Bandar Torkman, Bojourd, Gilavand, Damavand, Hamedan, Karaj, Lahijan, Shahinshar, Tehran, and Yaftabad. The questioning focused on seeking information about Bahá’í activities and about the Bahá’ís themselves. A report has been received that a bank in central Jiruft in the province of Fars had been ordered to produce a printout of all accounts held by Bahá’ís.

  • The Bahá’í International Community obtained a copy of a letter in which the government agency responsible for providing veterans’ benefits stated that an individual Bahá’í, who suffered extensive disability following his incarceration as a prisoner of war in the Iran-Iraq conflict, was not eligible to pension benefits because he belongs “to the Bahaist sect.”

  • Attacks on the Bahá’í Faith continue in the mass media, including on the Internet. Newspapers in Khorasan and Mazandaran have recently published items maligning Bahá’ís, while anti-Bahá’í pamphlets and tracts have been distributed in Shiraz and in the schools in Shahinshar, Ahvazk, and Babol Sar.

  • Reports have been received of banks refusing to grant loans and officials refusing to issue or renew business licenses solely on the grounds that the applicants were Bahá’ís. In Sanandaj, a bank official stated that the bank had received 14 loan applications from Bahá’ís, all of which will be rejected. Bank staff in Sari informed Bahá’ís who had applied for a loan, “It has been asked of us not to provide loans and other services to Bahá’ís.”

  • In Hamadan, the owner of a grocery store that had been operated by his family for 48 years tried to have the business license transferred to his name after the death of his father. He was told by a government official that business licenses for grocery stores would not be issued to Bahá’ís. He was told: “Wherever you go, even to the United Nations, you will end up here, where you will get the same clear answer.”

A moment of reflection

There is a plethora of documented incidents that highlight with great clarity the various incidents of injustice, atrocities and indignities that are inflicted on the Bahá’ís that live in Iran. The cruelty is not limited to any one city, town, region, gender or age. How can any individual have such faith that they could endure the cruelties that such oppression inflicts? This poem written by Amatu’l-Bahá Rúhiyyih Khánum describes how faith calls us to do the seemingly impossible. It shows us that when there is love we are able to see the end in the beginning and to dare to work for visions yet unseen.

This is Faith

To walk where there is no path
To breath where there is no air
To see where there is no light.
This is Faith.

To cry out in the silence
The silence of the night
And hearing no echo, believe
And believe again and again
This is Faith.

To hold pebbles and see jewels
To raise sticks and see forests
To smile with weeping eyes
This is Faith.
To say God I believe when others deny
I hear when there is no answer
I see though naught is seen
This is Faith.

And the fierce love in the heart
The save love that cries
Hidden Thou art there!
Veil Thy face and mute Thy tongue

Yet I see and hear Thee love
Beat me down to the bare earth
Yet I rise and love The, love
This is Faith.

Where people can sense the presence of God

Muslims to Mecca
Jews to Jerusalem
Christians to Bethlehem
Buddhists to Lumbini
and Baha’is to Acre.

The holiest spots on earth to Baha’is are the resting places of Baha’u’llah and the Bab, the founders of the Baha’i Faith and both considered Manifestations of God. They attract thousands of pilgrims and visitors each year to their sacred grounds. By any measure, the sites are beautiful. Stunning formal gardens surround them – the Shrine of Baha’u’llah in the countryside near Acre, north of the city of Haifa, and the Shrine of the Bab, a golden-domed building on the slope of Mount Carmel in the heart of Haifa itself.

Pilgrims and Baha’is throughout the world will tell you that the outward beauty is but a symbol, an expression of love for the Messengers of God who lie entombed there and a beacon of hope for the future of humanity. Although the two shrines have specific meaning for Baha’is, their spiritual nature appeals to others as well.

The Shrine of Baha’u’llah, the resting place of the founder of the Baha’i Faith, is the holiest spot on earth for His followers. It is near Acre, Israel and is the epicentre of a sacred spiritual force that is prevalent throughout the world. Baha’is around the world pray in the direction of this sacred shrine every day from their homes and Houses of Worship throughout the world. The approach to the Shrine of Baha’u’llah is through a beautiful garden that helps prepare visitors for entering the holy place.

"People who are not Baha’is come here and say it is like a piece of heaven falling from the sky," said Taraneh Rafati, who has served for the past 10 years as a pilgrim guide to the Baha’i holy sites. "Whether you are a Muslim, Jew, Christian, Buddhist, in the holy texts, heaven is described. It is like this," she said, mentioning the peacefulness, the beauty. "You come and feel close to your Lord. It is free of charge, and it is for everyone."

Mrs. Rafati describes that being in the shrines is: "not that we are worshipping the dust or worshipping a wall – it is the connection that the place has with our beloved. We do not go there to worship the flowers. We go to there to pour out our heart."

Half a million people visited the shrine areas last year, many of them tourists wanting to see the gardens and get a close look particularly at the Shrine of the Bab, a famous landmark in Israel that looks out over the city of Haifa and Haifa Bay, and beyond that to the Mediterranean Sea.

Bahá’í Shrines chosen as World Heritage Sites

A United Nations committee meeting in Quebec City has determined that two Baha'i Shrines in Israel possess “outstanding universal value” and should be considered as part of the cultural heritage of humanity.

The decision by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee means that the two most sacred sites for Baha'is - the resting places of the founders of their religion - join a list of internationally recognized sites like the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids, the Taj Mahal, and Stonehenge.

The Baha'i shrines are the first sites connected with a religious tradition born in modern times to be added to the list, which is maintained by UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The two shrines, one near the recognized heritage site of Old Acre on Israel's northern coast and the other on Mount Carmel in Haifa, are the resting places of Baha'u'llah and the Bab, the founders of the Baha'i Faith.

Baha'is believe that both Baha'u'llah and the Bab were messengers of God; their resting places are sites of pilgrimage for a religious community of some five million believers. The shrine of Baha'u'llah is the focal point of prayer for Baha'is all over the world, giving it an importance comparable to the Western Wall in Jerusalem for Jews and the Kaaba in Mecca for Muslims.

The Shrine of Baha’u’llah near Acre, north of Haifa – the holiest spot on earth for members of the Baha’i Faith – also is part of the World Heritage…The two shrines are noteworthy for the formal gardens that surround them, blending design elements from many cultures. In addition to Baha'i pilgrims, they attract hundreds of thousands of visitors and tourists every year.

Mr Albert Lincoln, secretary-general of the Baha'i International Community has said that "
we welcome the UNESCO recognition, which highlights the importance of the holy places of a religion that in 150 years has gone from a small group found only in the Middle East to a worldwide community with followers in virtually every country,” and “the Baha'i community is particularly grateful to the government of Israel for putting forward this nomination”.

Pilgrims describe their experience of these holy places as being able to find something, within the spirit that surrounding these places. It is a place where people can sense the presence of God.

Amassing of information on the Bahá’ís... the persecutions continue

  • Following the death of an eighty-eight-year-old believer in Boroujerd in October 2007, the Baha’is notified the Intelligence Ministry, governorship, municipal office, and the office that oversees affairs related to cemeteries that they would be preparing his grave for the interment. From the moment they began digging the grave, video cameras were set up in the Baha’i cemetery and in front of the home of the deceased, by order of the Intelligence Ministry. During the interment, which took place on 20 October 2007, Intelligence Ministry officials filmed every person who attended the funeral, as well as the license plates of all the vehicles parked where the funeral was held. Some officials objected to the presence of Muslim friends of the deceased and asked why they were attending the funeral.

  • Sometime between September to October 2007 in the city of Rafsanjan, Bahá’is were told by their Muslim friends who work in trade unions, that in a confidential letter, the Public Intelligence and National Security Force for public places had asked the trade unions to identify all Bahá’is who are employed in every trade. The director of the union had also been asked why all the reputable agencies in the country are managed by Bahá’is.

  • Late July 2007 brought reports that in the city of Karaj Bahá’is who apply for passports are given a special form to complete that requests detailed information on the applicant and all family members. This form is not issued by the passport office; it is issued by the Ministry of Intelligence.

Bahá’ís Commemorate the Martyrdom of The Báb

This week Baha’is from around the world mark the 158th anniversary of the Martyrdom of The Bab, one of the two central figures in the founding of their religion. The Bab attracted tens of thousands of people to His teachings, thousands of whom were killed in persecutions that swept Iran. Finally, authorities had the Bab Himself put to death in an attempt to stamp out the new religion.

This dramatic presentation highlights the events that took place on 9 July 1850 at noon, when the Bab was put to death by firing squad in the public square of Tabriz, Iran.

A half century after His execution, His sacred remains were brought to Haifa for entombment on Mount Carmel. Today His shrine is one of the most famous landmarks in Israel, and the Baha’i Faith is established in virtually every country.

The anniversary of the Martyrdom of the Bab is one of nine holy days when Baha’is suspend work. It is commemorated with prayers and special programs at noon on 9 July.

Amassing of information on the Bahá’ís... Bahá’ís in Iran continued persecutions

  • January 2008 brought reports that the bank accounts of Bahá’ís in Orumiyeh are being monitored and that similar steps were being taken in other cities in Iran. Cities included Khomein, Sarvestan, Shiraz, and Tehran.

  • Late December 2007 through to January 2008 had reports that the members of the small group of Bahá’ís that coordinates the affairs of the community of Qorveh on an ad hoc basis were each given a questionnaire to complete that calls for detailed information regarding their Bahá’í activities, Bahá’í relatives, and Muslim friends.

  • In December 2007 the city of Kerman had five officers from the Ministry of Intelligence entered the house of Mr. Danesh Charkhzarrin with a search warrant and confiscated his books, pictures of ‘Abdu’l-Baha, tapes, and various compact discs. Mr. Charkhzarrin was then taken to the Intelligence Ministry and interrogated for twelve hours. Most questions were about his job situation and his Muslim business associates. They also asked about his and his wife’s activities.

  • Again in December 2007, this time in the city of Zanjan, the Cultural Heritage, Handicraft and Tourism organization has asked all the artists from religious minorities who are to participate in an arts exhibition to fill out a questionnaire that includes a section in which the individual must specify his or her religion.

  • September to December 2007 features fifty-two summonses being issued to Baha’is to appear at their local office of the Intelligence Ministry for questioning. The interrogators, using every ploy to intimidate, threaten, and cause psychological damage, sought to obtain detailed information regarding the Baha’i community and the activities of Baha’is, as well as information on the personal lives of specified believers.

Nobel laureates call for release of Iranian Baha’i prisoners

Six Nobel Peace Prize laureates have issued a statement calling on the Iranian government to free immediately seven prominent Iranian Baha’is imprisoned in Tehran.

The six Nobel winners, under the banner of the Nobel Women’s Initiative, called on the Iranian government to guarantee the safety of the Baha'is - being held in Evin Prison with no formal charges and no access to lawyers - and to grant them an unconditional release.

"We are thankful to these internationally prominent activists for calling publicly for the release of our fellow Baha'is, who are detained for no reason other than their religion," said Bani Dugal, principal representative of the Baha’i International Community to the United Nations.

The Nobel laureates supporting the statement are:

  • Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan Maguire, founders of the Peace People in Northern Ireland and winners of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976;

  • Rigoberta Menchu Tum, a leading advocate of ethno-cultural reconciliation in her native Guatemala and Nobel winner in 1992;

  • Professor Jody Williams, international campaigner for the banning of land mines, winner in 1997;

  • Iranian human rights lawyer Dr. Shirin Ebadi, winner in 2003;

  • Kenyan environmental activist Professor Wangari Muta Maathai, Nobel winner in 2004.

Their statement, issued on the letterhead of the Nobel Women’s Initiative, reads:

"We note with concern the news of the arrest of six prominent Baha’is in Iran on 14 May 2008. We note that Mrs. Fariba Kamalabadi, Mr. Jamaloddin Khanjani, Mr. Afif Naeimi, Mr. Saeid Rezaie, Mr. Behrouz Tavakkoli, and Mr. Vahid Tizfahm are members of the informal group known as the Friends in Iran that coordinates the activities of the Baha’i community in Iran; we further note that another member of the Friends in Iran, Mrs Mahvash Sabet, has been held in custody since 5 March 2008; we register our deepest concern at the mounting threats and persecution of the Iranian Baha’i community.

We call on the Iranian Government to guarantee the safety of these individuals (and) grant their immediate unconditional release."

The Nobel Women's Initiative was established in 2006 by the six women laureates - representing North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa – to contribute to building peace by working together with women around the world. Only 12 women have ever won the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Women’s Initiative maintains an office in Ottawa, Canada.

The Detentions from March 2008 to May 2008... continued persecution of the Baha’is in Iran

  • Miss Haleh Rouhi, Mr Sasan Taqva and Miss Raha Sabet: These three young Baha’is from Shiraz had been incarcerated on 19 November 2007 on the wholly unjustified grounds that the social service activities in which they and fifty other Baha’is as well as a number of their Muslim friends had been engaged, were being used as a subterfuge to teach the Baha’i Faith. In April they were granted temporary release for five days, with permission to extend this release. It is understood from reports received from their families that the three Baha’is did remain free for the additional five days, at the end of which they returned to the detention centre of the Ministry of Intelligence in Shiraz, where they continue to be confined.

  • The fifty Baha’is from Shiraz whose three-year prison sentences were suspended conditional upon their regular participation in classes conducted by the Islamic Propaganda Organization began these sessions on 3 March 2008. Separate classes are held for men and women and on different days. The three-hour long sessions, which consist mainly of recitation of Qur’ánic verses followed by discussion in a question and answer format, are held once every two weeks.

  • In March 2008, Mr. Mohammad Ismael Forouzan from Abadeh, who had been arrested in May 2007, and whose appeal had been heard in November 2007, was called to the office of the Ministry of Intelligence and immediately detained upon his arrival. Officials informed him that his appeal had been denied and that his one-year imprisonment had begun on that same day. Mr. Forouzan is forty-two years of age, married, and has two children.

  • In March 2008, Messrs. Touraj Amini, Iraj Amini, and Payman Amoui were arrested on the charge that they had been teaching the Faith at their place of work.

Baha’is are the largest religious minority in Iran

Fardanews has published an article in their website that questions the true population of the adherents of the largest religious minority in Iran.

The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran are constantly searching for ways that deny the existence of people who follow the Baha’i Faith in Iran. This time Fardanews adopted a rather innovative approach that analysing the last two Government census carried out since the Islamic Revolution.

Baha’is throughout the world are working towards the “betterment of the world and the tranquillity of it’s people”. Baha’is participate in socio-economic projects that transform communities and revitalise it’s inhabitants. Meanwhile, Baha’is in Iran continue to sacrifice their lives for their Faith as their current government denies both their human rights and their existence in society.

Baha’is throughout the world, especially in Iran, will proudly stand up and call themselves Baha’is. In all other countries during census time, Baha’is proudly mark their beliefs and identify themselves as Baha’is.

When the government does not make room for correct identification of religion on their census papers, how can they expect to collect the right information? When a government blatantly presents fallacies as truths, how can one expect that the information collected is a true representation of the state of their nation?

More attacks on the Baha’i Faith

Fars News Agency interviewed Mr Hedayat’ullah Behboudi –the editor of the quarterly magazine published by the Political Study and Research Institute (PSRI) about the series of recent publication against Baha’i Faith in Iran. Mr Behboudi clearly stated that the Political Study and Research Institute will continue to publish articles and information about the Baha’i Faith and Baha’is in Iran. However, all of their previous publications have been found to be both untrue and misleading. The Fars News Agency interviewer indicated that all these materials had been prepared with very limited or little to no reference to Baha’i resources. As matter of fact, the majority of articles were prepared using books and/or articles that were written by individuals who had resigned from the Baha’i Faith and were criticising the Baha’i Faith.

The activities of the Political Study and Research Institute are very distressing. By presenting fallacies about the Baha’i Faith they are doing a great injustice to their readers. They continue to breed ignorance that intensifies the persecution of the Baha’is in Iran.
