IN THE NAME OF FREEDOM

Yesterday morning, four Bahá’í youth who were deprived from their studies (Armin Rahmani, Samim Pezeshki, Navid Khanjani, and Hesam Mithaqi) went to see Mr. Hujatu’l-Islam Rahbar, the representative of the people of Isfahan in the Islamic Majlis [Parliament], to pursue subjects such as their expulsion from university, denial of permission to enter universities and deprivation of an education.

After constant referral to the Evaluation Organization and the Ministry of Education, which proved to be useless and elicited no response, these young people chose this representative of Majlis, who is a member of the Cultural Committee and also the Imam Jum`eh of Isfahan, to seek his support for their right to an education.

At the start, when these education-deprived students entered the office of this representative, a civilian member of security named Qandi was there and said that an order had been received that Mr. Rahbar should not interfere in the matter of these students’ right to an education. He then threatened these youth and asked them to leave the office. We should mention that, at first in his short answer, Mr. Rahbar had told these students that he was unable to pursue these matters.

However, the complainants were asking to speak to the representative in order to bring up the right of education for Bahá’í students in the Islamic Majlis, which, according to the law, was the best legal way for them to work at obtaining their rights. The students waited to meet the representative, but the presence of the security officer in the room and his threats that they should leave the office resulted in their harsh treatment.

The security officer, who had insisted that the students should leave the office, then summoned armed security officers in civilian clothing to the office of the Majlis representative. These officers closed the door and windows so that others could not enter and started to harshly threaten the students and to create an atmosphere of intimidation.

At this time, Mr. Rahbar, who is the also Imam Jum`eh, left his office and again stated that he was not able to attend to the request of these youth, who all had high marks and had ranked high in their studies. He intervened so that they could leave and to prevent the security officers from confronting them.

These four youth, who were prevented from studying and pursuing their requests, were relying on both the representative of Majlis and the execution of laws according to their human rights and citizenship; by seeing the armed security officers, they were forced to leave. In the new year, in spite of having high grades and school certificates, they will remain without the right to an education.
